Lucas County residents, specifically young voters, finally have a candidate they can get behind for county commissioner in Ben Konop.
Konop, a professor of law at UT, took part in a debate on Tuesday with fellow-candidate George Sarantou on the front steps of the Student Union, and the difference in ideas from the candidates was as different as their ages.
While Sarantou spoke about his positive track record on city council, it was apparent that his ideas for the area around UT dealt more with staying on the same course that we've been on for quite a while now.
Even though Sarantou's claims of working for more student housing around UT sounded nice, his quotes about too many students living in one house in the Bancroft Hills area showed that he's quite happy with the laws set in place that restrict more than three unrelated persons from living in a house together.
This one issue isn't a big deal in itself, but it shows that Sarantou is more willing to accept unfair laws rather than making moves to do something about them.
On the other hand, Konop seems to bring some fresh air to the county, and it's obvious he has UT in mind.
With ties to the university and a youthful attitude, Konop has pledged his support to the university in an attempt to strengthen the city and county and turn it into a more youthful, vibrant area that will attract jobs and become a competitive force in the nation.
In only a half-hour debate, Konop was able to make the distinction between him and his opponent glaringly clear.
If young people in the area are looking for a leader who will represent them and make decisions based on the best interest of the county, they need look no further than Ben Konop.
