Tim Beckman, 43, will be announced as the new head coach of the UT football team at a 1 p.m. press conference today, according to sources inside the athletic department.
Beckman is currently the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State University. The Cowboys finished the regular season at 9-3 this year. The defense allowed an average of 26.9 points and 392.2 yards per game.
Beckman began coaching in 1988 as a graduate assistant at Auburn. He was the secondary coach and a recruiting coordinator at Western Carolina University from 1990-95 and was the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Elon College from 1996-97.
He coached at Bowling Green State University from 1998-2004 as the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. He was the cornerbacks coach at The Ohio State University from 2005-06 and has coached at Oklahoma State since 2007. While at OSU, Beckman coached several current NFL players, including Brandon Mitchell, Tyler Everett, Nate Salley, Donte Whitner and Ashton Youboty.
During his time at BG, Beckman was nominated three times for the Frank Broyles Award, which is presented to the nation's top assistant coach. He was also named one of America's top defensive coordinators in 2001 when the Falcons led the Mid-American Conference in total defense, rushing defense, turnovers, scoring margin and scoring defense. BG won the Motor City Bowl in 2003 and the GMAC Bowl in 2004.
Beckman graduated from the University of Findlay in 1988 and lettered in football in 1984 and 1985. He went to Forest Park High School in Beaumont, Texas for two years and attended Berea High School in Berea, Ohio for his junior and senior years.
Beckman will become the 25th head coach in the history of UT football. The search for a new coach began on Nov. 2 when Tom Amstutz announced he would be resigning from the head coaching position at the end of the season.
