Sophomore Austin Dantin (far right) will be Toledo's starting quarterback to open the season. Also on the roster are (from left-to-right) redshirt freshmen Michael Matthews and Terrence Owens, sophomore David Pasquale and senior Alex Pettee.

Toledo head coach Tim Beckman announced today that sophomore Austin Dantin will be the starting quarterback for the season opener against Arizona on Friday at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

Dantin played in seven games last season completing 79-of-119 passes (66.4%) for 962 yards and four touchdowns and four interceptions after replacing Aaron Opelt, who suffered a torn rotator cuff. The 6-2, 189 pound sophomore threw for 326 yards and rushed for 45 more in the season finale last year against Bowling Green.

"Austin Dantin will be the starting quarterback," Beckman said.

Beckman also announced that Dantin would be backed up by senior Alex Pettee, and that all four quarterbacks should see action against Arizona.

"You will see all the quarterbacks in the [Arizona] game," Beckman said. "David [Pasquale's] got his package that we do and Terrance Owens is still in the hunt for taking snaps."

Pettee completed 37-of 58 passes (63.8%) last season for 380 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions over the course of four games.

Pasquale did not attempt a pass last season but carried the ball 24 times for 78 yards with three touchdowns. Beckman also said the 6-2, 238 pound sophomore may see some action at the running back position for Toledo.

Owens was ranked No. 2 on the most recent depth chart but was moved behind Pettee. The redshirt freshman was rated as the No. 4 quarterback in Ohio by Scout.com coming out of Glenville High School in 2008.
