As the snow begins to melt and spring break approaches, students at the University of Toledo are deciding to do some “thawing out” themselves. This need to unwind and embark on a week of fun leads many UT students south of the border to Mexico. However, students should be aware that a week of fun in what they may find to be paradise can easily turn into a nightmare. That is why we advise students traveling to Mexico for break to take every precaution during their trips.
In late February, the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs issued a travel alert, warning Americans traveling to Mexico to be as prudent as possible. The alert reported that violence in Mexico has been increasing and advised Americans that it is important to use “common-sense” during their vacations. According to the State Department, “Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where prostitution and drug-dealing might occur, can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable.”
In the same document, the State Department also informs citizens that there have been recent, violent attacks in the areas of Michoacan, Durango, Coahuila and Chihuahua. And according to the warning, the U.S. Embassy has urged U.S. citizens to delay “unnecessary travel” to the specific areas mentioned above. Although these areas aren’t typically on college students’ lists of vacation destinations, it is still important that students heed the travel warning because violence can still occur in other tourist towns such as Cancun.
While you try to have fun this spring break, remember that tourist and resort areas are deemed so for a reason, so don’t venture out to discover the “real” Mexico because things could turn very “real,” very quickly. In addition, always travel with a group of friends, and if you happen to take a cultural excursion make sure you’re with a trusted guide.
In general, it is important to stay safe during spring break regardless of where you’re visiting. All students should know their limits when it comes to partying, as well as remember to drink responsibly and always practice safe sex. We wish all students a safe and enjoyable spring break.
