Spank trains, blood, murder and orgasms — these elements made up the harrowing tale of how I lost my Rocky Horror virginity.
I attended my first "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" performance at the Collingwood Arts Center Saturday.
In this form of performance, called show casting, the movie is played on a screen while actors re-enact the scenes on the stage. There is a dramatic difference in watching the movie at home to seeing it performed live.
One is considered a "'Rocky Horror' virgin" if they have never seen the show performed live.
To lose their "virginity," one must attend the show and participate in the ritual.
As tradition requires, the actors drew a "V" on my cheek with lipstick to signify my innocence. Then, the entire cast lined up and I crawled through the actors' legs, each one of them spanking me. From what I experienced, the cast and crew were very warm and welcoming.
Those who were not above the age of 18 were taught the "Time Warp" dance onstage and were not spanked.
Before the show, an orgasm contest was held. All audience members were invited on to the stage to vocalize fake orgasms and compete for first place.
As the cast waited for the audience to arrive and take their seats, nothing seemed planned. Then, two of the actors got up and performed an impromptu, clothed lap dance with each other.
The actors and audience shouted obscenities on cue throughout the performance.
For example, each time Janet spoke, the audience shouted, "Slut!" and when Brad spoke, they shouted, "Asshole!"
The experience included and encouraged audience participation in the forms of costumes, props and vocalization. I chose not to dress in the fashion of "Rocky Horror" characters, but my costume was dark and ripped.
There was an old couple behind me enthusiastically throwing rice and toast. Afterward, toilet paper was given as a souvenir.
All these actions were done in a good-natured, joking manner and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
They were a very open-minded group, especially to those who had the weirdest costumes.
The amount of time and effort put into this production was evident, and it was definitely worth the money.
