UT administrators have had a lot of difficulties lately discerning the private sphere from the public sphere, and carrying themselves accordingly. Since the fallout of Crystal Dixon's controversial article regarding homosexuality in the April 18 edition of The Toledo Free Press, including her suspension and later termination, Lloyd Jacobs has pursued a campaign to better identify when a UT administrator is "on" and not within the private sphere.

Rarely has a meeting of business leaders, members of government, educators and administrators ever produced anything but a bunch of hot air, contention and irresolute commitments. The July 17 roundtable discussion featuring all of the above members of society shockingly, though, displayed a lot of agreement and constructive discussion.

There is a notebook in my desk drawer with an unfinished short story inside called "Stroke of Beauty." It's about an old painter who has lost the inspiration that once helped him paint magical masterpieces and flowing vistas that would fascinate those passing by him in the park.

The way they work together, the way they go together, how they're spelled - everything. When I was in England in May, I took along the British grammar book "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" for some light reading in the car; before that it was "Sister Bernadette's Barking Dog," a book all about the lost art of sentence diagramming.

With the hurdle of the spring semester behind me and the anticipation of more to come, I retrospectively meander around through my experiences in school over the past year in an attempt to extricate new understandings and revelations. Some of them are broad lessons to be learned which have been acquired through meeting goals and overcoming challenges.

Our educational system makes very little sense. We spend four years in high school to prepare us for college. Problem is, high school is nothing like college. You are in one place from eight a.m. till three p.m., sitting in a desk. Everyone cares about your well-being and your grades.
