College Republicans to identify liberal professors

UT College Republicans are compiling a list of liberal professors who they claimed have a bias against conservative students.

The list will include professors who students say have let their political views interfere with the way they interact with students in the classroom.

UT College Republicans President Matt Rubin, a junior majoring in political science and public administration, said the list is not an attempt to bash professors who have liberal ideas, but instead, it is an attempt to speak out for students who may have been victims of the bias, which was then reflected in their grade.

“We’ve been portrayed in the media, as well as comments from people in the community including College Democrats, saying that we’re creating a blacklist in order to smear the names of professors and that’s not true,” Rubin said. “We’re giving a voice to the students that have been harassed because of their political beliefs. It’s the same thing as bashing a student because they’re gay.”

Rubin said the list of liberal professors is important because of the many complaints he received from students at UT College Republicans meetings, concerning professors who made unnecessary political comments, including anti-Bush statements.

“At our weekly meeting, something we like to do is take time out for students to tell stories of any bias they have had in classes. What we’re doing is representing students who have had that experience. We’re trying to expose professors who have liberal bias and go against everything UT stands for,” Rubin said. “How is saying ‘President Bush is the dumbest president this country has ever had and should be hanged’ improving the human condition?”

The students who submitted and reported incidents such as these will remain anonymous, Rubin said.

“We had a student who said, in an ancient Greece class, Professor William O’Neal claimed that America did not liberate Europe in World War II. However; it was freed by Charles De Gaulle and the free French, not U.S. Soldiers,” Rubin said.

O’Neal, chair and professor of history at UT denied ever making the comment.

“To base this on the statement of a single student doesn’t seem as evidence to convict liberalism,” he said. “If you had a whole class come and say, ‘this guy is preaching his own gospel,’ that would be different, or if there was a substantial number of students from that class.”

Rubin said the list of dubbed liberal professors could also be beneficial to some students.

“We like to think of it as a liberal professor directory, not a list. Also, we’d like for it to be used as a resource for liberal students who are looking for like-minded professors that will positively affect their grade based on their bias,” he said.

Rubin added he and the UT College Republicans are not against professors who have liberal views.

“We realize that some professors are liberal, and that’s ok, it’s when they completely disregard a student’s opinion or they have a bias against them that might affect the way they are treated or graded, is what we think is wrong,” Rubin said.

O’Neal said although there may be some professors who let their political preferences affect the way they treat their students, it is not something he has witnessed as a common denominator at UT.

“We’re all human and there are some people who are totally committed to their own view points with very strong personalities, so I’m sure in our imperfect world this does exist,” he said. “But I do not know of anyone in this department who will base grades on hair color, eye color or political aspirations, and I have been the chair of the history department for three years and have been teaching here for 40 years.”

David Mann, a second year law student, said there are other important issues the College Republicans could be concerning themselves with.

“If I were a College Republican, I’d be spending my time trying to figure out why young people overwhelmingly support President Obama and the Democratic Party, and not waste it on this silly idea,” Mann said. “But if conservative students are afraid to defend their principles in the classroom, maybe they do need a list of professors to avoid.”

UT has an abundance of resources available to students to help them if they experience this sort of bias, O’Neal said.

“If the student feels abused, they should talk to their professor. If that doesn’t solve the problem, they should go to the department chair. If there is still a problem, they can even go to the dean or the Vice President [for] Student Affairs. There are so many places to go to avoid this type of thing,” he said.

Rubin said, though the directory of liberal professors is of high importance to the UT College Republicans, they have done many other positive things that people should focus on.

“We like to consider ourselves a well-rounded group. We’re not just a group of students sitting in a basement trying to slander these professors. We’re really doing a lot more this year. We’ve been helping out with several local campaigns and we also are having a school supply drive for students at Scott High School,” he said.

Rubin said the UT College Republicans are still working on compiling the directory of liberal professors, and expect it to be available on their Web site by Wednesday.

I'm just livin' out the American dream

"Growing up in Canada, I often saw the ugly side of liberal teachers."

No, you saw the ugly side of teachers (if your story is even true). Anyone who berates others because they share opposing views are in the wrong. People from all sides of the political spectrum do it. So called conservatives show up at town hall meetings and berate anyone who supports health care reform. If a liberal calls into Glenn Beck's radio show or Rush Limbaugh's radio show, s/he is often shouted down.

"Liberal hypocrates. If the same teachers were pushing conservative politics they would be banned for sure."

I'd like to see your evidence that they would.

And, by the way, it's "hypocrites." Damned liberal education.

What does "liberal" mean?''''
What does "conservative" mean?
Are these definitions anchored in a certain period of time?

"I can give names and class numbers of professors who have openly discriminated against my son because he challenges and rightly so"

Now conservative and republican students are so devastated that they need to have their mommy help out? Puts a whole new perspective on the “parachute parent” dilemma.

Growing up in Canada, I often saw the ugly side of liberal teachers. They would cry out their views in the classroom, almost every day. A few of us kids would stand up to them, but most were sheep. Several times I refused to sit down as a teacher berated me for my opposition to his views. His or her views that should not be expressed in the classroom. As I was fond of telling them, they held a position of power and should not be preaching their political views to impressional schoolchildren. They are quick to preach equality and understanding, but they are even faster to revoke those basic courtesies from those who disagree with them. Liberal hypocrates. If the same teachers were pushing conservative politics they would be banned for sure.

I can give names and class numbers of professors who have openly discriminated against my son because he challenges and rightly so, their assertions regarding their personal opinions on politics and the world situation. They weren't teaching facts at that point and, thank God, when they were challenged with facts they admitted their error and backed down. Unfortunately, I can give you names and class numbers of professors who are guilty of the same or worse and did not back down when the discussion turned against them and they went on the punish my son the only way they could. His grades.
Now in even the narrowest context this is harassment. If my son was gay or a liberal the libs would be all over the professors who were doing the harassment. However, because he is being harassed for standing up for his convictions as a conservative he is fair game and free speech is out the window.

I have a little game I play when faced with situations like this. It's not so much of a game if you're serious, but I pick the operative words out of a particularly offensive statement and change them to something else to see if the statement would still fly. Like changing black to white or liberal to conservative, gay to straight. More people should try it and see how their biases stand up to the test. It is a real eye opener to people that can stand to have their eyes opened. You'd be surprised at how many people don't want their eyes opened.

I just want to say that I not only witnessed liberal biased teach but have been a victim of it by a liberal feminist teacher.

The only male to pass my honors english 112 class with a B or higher was a metro sexual male, a liberal and moderate to liberal women. Two conservative girls, girls with a typical conservative argumentative paper, also failed to get a B or higher.

It is only an anecdotal situation but it happens all the time on every level. I support this list for it is teachers that SHOULD be on the list that are potentially hurting the futur for students who disagree with teachers politcally. At the least it should be looked at.

If one feels certain liberal professors are bias against them, they need to record their proof so we can start to make some progress on this issue. I too have been treated like an outcast at the college i attend just because I am not a liberal. The liberals out there need to understand something: just because we are not liberal, doesn't make us completely conservative either. Have you liberals ever heard of a libertarianism?? Liberals are quick to pass judgement with which they do not agree with or understand. I thought that one of the reasons this country is so great is because of our diversity. I guess the liberals do not agree.

I have to say that not only is the idea of a "Hit List of Liberal Professors" offensive to those of us who identify as liberal students, but there is something more appalling in Matt Rubin's comments.

To compare harassment because of political beliefs to "gay-bashing" is entirely offensive. I don't see republicans being denied civil rights, or being beaten and left for dead in back alleys because of their political views. I personally know other LGBT students who refuse to walk around UT's campus alone after dark for fear of being, as Matt put it, "gay-bashed." Comparing LGBT rights and issues to those of a political party seems like a far flung stretch of any situation that could be going on at UT. Especially considering the high ranking status of Matt Rubin in the Student Government.

"He or she should explain both sides of an issue but not be an advocate of one side or the other. Let the students make up their own minds about that after reading other materials and having a large dose of life's experiences. If a professor does not follow these simple common sense guidelines, he or she becomes nothing more than a propagandist who is disproportionately in love with his or her own ideas. "

In order to form their own opinions people first need to gain knowledge and information, even if they disagree with it. You can not form an opinion on climate change or evolution unless you fully understand it. A principle of education is learning from someone that has more knowledge and experience then you. Perhaps Republicans need to keep an open mind and actually listen rather then a closed mind. You are in a course to learn what you are taught, and be tested on what you have learned, not to form personal opinions. If you are taught evolution you are being asked to learn the topic not demand equal time for intellgent design.

The sarcastic retorts that perhaps the UT Republican students should start publishing the lists of Jewish and Catholic professors is off point. A Jewish professor should be able to explain and advocate Jewish religious principles in a Jewish college but he should only be explaining (an not advocating) those principles in a secular college. The same goes for a college professor who is Catholic. And the same goes for an agnostic professor in a secular college. He or she should be teaching his or her courses objectively and not subjectively. He or she should explain both sides of an issue but not be an advocate of one side or the other. Let the students make up their own minds about that after reading other materials and having a large dose of life's experiences. If a professor does not follow these simple common sense guidelines, he or she becomes nothing more than a propagandist who is disproportionately in love with his or her own ideas.

By creating the list in the first place, the UT repubs shot down any real attempt at starting a dialog or improving their situation. They wanted to further polarize the situation rather them bring people together. Outside of being a great publicity stunt their antics have yet to help the student body.

I also see that our student government Krystal Weaver is a fan of the College Republicans on facebook. It's great that our leadership is so happy to endorse such division and hatred on our campus.

I just read the stories of alleged bigotry suffered by the mental midgets of the College Republicans on their website. First, I was shocked at the amount of grammatical errors in their writing. Second, as I suspected, the stories were largely anecdotal and lacked concrete evidence of discrimination.

No professors were "named" in the stories, just a lot of "my professor was weally, weally mean to me." One conservative student was shocked that he was reprimanded after he was abusive and swore at his professor! Dolt. Way to win friends and influence people.

Another was mortified that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was speaking on campus on the subject of Climate Change. Imagine that. A lawyer who specializes in environmental law speaking on Climate Change. The horrors! Oh, I guess he did have the audacity to disagree with George W. on the issue. Of course, if I remember correctly, John McCain disagreed with Bush on Climate Change policy. Hmm. Oh wait. He's a republican so it's okay.

"Should we compile a list of gay professors? How about a list of Jewish or Catholic professors?" No, unless those professors are biased against others who are not like them or share their views. This isn't a witch hunt, nor is it a character assasination. The "professors" on this list are there because they let their political views influence how they interact with students, which is wrong. It is meant to inform other conservative students which professors might treat them unfairly. I see nothing wrong with it. There are other avenues that students could take to address precieved injustices, like going through the school administration, however, many times it will come down to the students word vs the professors word, and the administration would likely side with the professor. Now before any liberals start trying spout off about me and who I am or what I know, I'm not a republican, democrat, nor am I associated with any political party, I can't stand either party. I believe in fiscal conservatisim, strong national defense, and small government. I believe that gays should have equal rights, and support other "liberal" social policies, not because they're liberal, or because I agree with them personally, but because the government shouldn't be involved in many of those issues in the first place. I could go on, but I won't. The point is, if any professor, conservative, liberal, gay, straight, black, white, catholic, jew, or whatever other group/persuasion/gender/race or whatever, is biased against any student based on their beliefs/involvment/membership in any group it is wrong. and if students want to make a list so others know who to avoid, I have no problem with that.

oh and to moderate prof, you are a joke. keep blaming bush while Hussein Obama's ratings plummet. Just like a liberal to categorize everyone into groups. Republicans are only slightly less weak than you eco junkie libs. This country needs a serious makeover and a future without such pathetically weak, piss poor excuses for instructors. its about time somebody takes action. College campuses have become a haven and a breeding ground for outrageous liberal propaganda that is continually shoved down the collective face of classrooms all over the country. the funny thing is is that in the real world, 98% of people dont think the way these lunatic professors do. they gravitate towards academia because nobody else wants to hear their non-stop pissing and moaning about the enviroment, world peace and all these other things liberals cant but will strive to control. Most of these professors that are the target wouldnt even look at me crooked let alone say something to me. they are weak cowards that are only strong within their domain. its time these 60's has beens stop pushing their tired rhetoric and get out of the way so the younger generation can attempt to clean up the mess these swine have left us.

No doubt this is a publicity stunt to get Matt Rubin on FOX News and to give him a national platform so he can begin to raise money to run for higher office. And it will work. This is a party so wanting for leadership that Sarah Palin can rise to prominence without having a basic understanding of the givens of American foreign policy.

Nonetheless, this kind of reactionary tactic is symptomatic of why people are leaving the party. I am a professor in the English department, and until 2002, I was a registered Republican. I did and do stand for fiscal conservatism, but the abuses of the Bush Administration and the subsequent piling-on by what began to seem to me to be crazy people in my own party drove me out.

I'm sure I'll end up on the liberal professors list, at which time I will be happy to join the class action suit that we will likely file. But that's not what concerns me most. What concerns me most is that an organization as prominent as the UT College Republicans would embrace the very tactics that Prescott Bush rightly denounced during the McCarthy hearings -- tactics that ruined hundreds of lives unnecessarily and certainly unjustly, and tactics that had and have more in common with the tactics of mid-century fascist and communist authoritarian regimes than they do with anything recognizably American.

Shame on you, UT College Republicans. Shame.

As usual, I find myself amazed at the hypocrisy of some ( not all, but some) on both the left and the right. If it wasn't okay for right-wingers in the 50's to engage in assults on the character of people who didn;t share their world view, (and it wasn't okay) then it isn't okay for liberals to do the same to those with whom they disagree either. People on the left, right and in the middle should be able to express their views in a respectful manner and not be labled Facists, Communists etc. just because they think outside of your particlular box.

As far as the College Republicans are concerned, I have one question. Since you are of military age, and you probably believe that Bush was right to send our troops into Iraq, why aren't all of you signing up to go over there and fight??
