Toledo senior kicker Alex Steigerwald was arrested earlier this month for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Steigerwald was pulled over at 2:55 a.m. on July 8, after running a red light at the intersection of Bancroft Street and University Hills Boulevard.
According to the police report, the officer “observed [Steigerwald] having dilated pupils with glassy eyes” and saw a can of “Natural Light” in a shopping bag behind the driver’s seat.
Also in the car with Steigerwald were UT wide receivers Robin Bailey and Kenny Stafford.
Steigerwald told the officer he had a few drinks that evening and used the car door for balance when getting out for a field sobriety test.
The officer observed “a high level of intoxication” after checking his eyes and even had to terminate the “one leg stand test” for Steigerwald’s safety.
Steigerwald refused a preliminary breath test at the scene and was placed under arrest.
Steigerwald has a career field goal percentage of 85.7 percent (36-42). Although he does not have enough attempts to qualify, that is remarkably close to the NCAA record, held by UCLA kicker John Lee, who made 85.9 percent (79-92) of his field goal attempts from 1982-85. The senior kicker also holds the Mid-American Conference record with 23 consecutive field goals, besting the previous MAC record of 19 set by UT’s Jason Robbins (2004-05).
Steigerwald made 16-21 field goals last season, including a career-long 48-yarder which helped lead UT to victory in the Big House at Michigan.
In 2007, Steigerwald was named second-team All-MAC after hitting all 13 field goal attempts, including a game-winning 40-yarder as time expired in a 43-40 win against Ohio, and was the only kicker in the nation to not miss a field goal with at least 10 attempts.
