Former Notre Dame assistant coach Greg Smith was announced as the new head coach of the women’s volleyball team at Savage Arena on Monday.
“Greg’s background as far as being a head coach in the Big East and ACC, as well as having extensive Midwest ties, particularly in Ohio, clearly made him the ideal choice to be our next volleyball coach,” said UT Athletic Director Mike O’Brien. “I believe Greg’s experience in all aspects of volleyball, including serving as the recruiting coordinator for a very competitive Notre Dame program, will propel UT volleyball to a bright and exciting future.”
Smith has spent the past three seasons as the top assistant at Notre Dame, where the Fighting Irish have posted a 50-41 record, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006. Smith previously coached at Virginia Tech (2000-05) for six seasons, where he registered an 81-94 record. In 2002, Smith was honored as the 2002 Big East Conference Coach of the Year as his Hokies finished second overall in the conference. Smith came to Virginia Tech from Ohio State, where he served as an assistant coach for three seasons.
“I’m very excited and honored to be chosen to lead the Toledo women’s volleyball program,” said Smith. “The commitment the university and athletic department is making to the volleyball program is impressive, and I believe the recent renovation of Savage Arena marks the start of a new era for the program.”
Former UT Head Coach Kent Miller resigned after 12 seasons of service following a 14-17 season to accept a position as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois.
