UT sophomore Naama Shafir was recently chosen to represent her home country of Israel on the U20 National Team. Shafir, originally from Hoshaya, Israel, was named to the Mid American Conference All-Freshman team, while also earning honorable mention All-MAC honors. She led the Rockets with a team-high 4.5 assists, while also tallying 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per contest. Her 139.5 assists ranked fourth highest in the MAC and her 362 total points during the 2008-09 season were the fourth-most in UT history by a freshman. She also scored in double figures in 19 of 31 games and had at least five assists on twleve occasions. Shafir will be representing the Israel National Team for the fifth consecutive year. She averaged 21 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists last year in Division B of the U18 European Championship. The U20 European Championship begins in July with Shafir scheduled to compete in eight games for Israel. Shafir helped the Rockets finish with an 18-13 record, with an 11-5 mark in the MAC, as UT advanced to the MAC Tournament Semifinals for the third time in four seasons.
