About the Independent Collegian

The Independent Collegian is the student-run newspaper for The University of Toledo. It has a rich tradition of covering news that is relevant to the the entire university community, but most importantly, to the students.

We publish once a week on Wednesday during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer, we issue a special section for incoming freshmen and publish breaking news online.

The IC traces its roots to 1919, when it was founded as The Universi-Teaser. In 1922, the name of the newspaper was changed to The Campus Collegian and was shortened to The Collegian in 1962. In 2000, the newspaper severed legal and financial ties to the university, becoming The Independent Collegian. Today, it is published by the

Collegian Media Foundation, a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization.

The newspaper of record for the University of Toledo has covered young students going off to defend their country in World War II and others returning from the War in Iraq. It has covered the sudden resignation of one university president and the sudden deaths of five others. It has covered the offbeat – from the group 10,000 Maniacs performing in the Student Union to 10,000 fans lined up for tickets to see Elvis Presley in his penultimate concert.

The Collegian was there during the Rockets’ 35-0 football winning streak – still the second longest in NCAA history – and it chronicled the defeat of Bobby Knight’s national championship Indiana Hoosiers in the first game to be played in then-Centennial Hall.
